On Friday night, the fifth-ranked Ohio Northern women’s basketball team beat 20th-ranked SUNY Geneseo, 72-55, to advance to the Elite Eight for the first time in school history. The Polar Bears were led by junior center Amy Bullimore, who tallied 23 points and 12 rebounds in the program’s first Sweet 16 appearance since 1988. After Friday night, just eight teams remain in this year’s NCAA Division III women’s basketball tournament. Fifth-ranked Ohio Northern downed 20th-ranked SUNY Geneseo 72-55, as only two victors in this year’s Sweet 16 won by less than 10 points.

Eight minutes and 54 seconds. That’s how long the fifth-ranked Ohio Northern women’s basketball team held 20th-ranked SUNY Geneseo scoreless to begin their Sweet 16 matchup on Friday night.

The Polar Bears jumped out to a 21-0 lead during that time span, as six different ONU players scored before Geneseo got on the board.

Last weekend, the fifth-ranked Ohio Northern women’s basketball team advanced to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 1988, defeating Lakeland (Wis.) in round one by 32 points, and 15th-ranked Trine in round two by seven.

This weekend, King Horn will once again play host to NCAA Division III women’s basketball tournament action. After hosting the first two rounds last weekend, ONU will host the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight rounds this Friday and Saturday, respectively, as well.

The fifth-ranked, undefeated Polar Bears will face 20th-ranked SUNY Geneseo (N.Y.) in the Sweet 16 on Friday night at 7:30 p.m., in the nightcap, while 10th-ranked Christopher Newport (Va.) and 18th-ranked Hope (Mich.) will battle in the first game of the night at 5:30 p.m.

Seven Top-10 schools still alive in Sweet 16

After the second round, only 16 teams remain in the NCAA Division III women’s basketball tournament. While seven Top-10 teams are still alive, including fifth-ranked Ohio Northern, 18th-ranked Hope headlined the second round by beating third-ranked, undefeated Thomas More, who had not lost since March 15, 2014.

When it happened, Erin Hester (formerly Erin Hipp) was at her West Chester, Ohio home with her two daughters, ages five and two, and her two stepsons, ages 11 and nine.

“It was something that I was following so I was very excited, knowing that she was going into the meet first in the nation,” Hester (below) said. “It was definitely something that I was following and watching. My kids were all excited about it too.”

For just over an hour on Sunday, Michele Durand thought her team was going to New York. She wasn’t pleased.

“When I first heard, I was mad, because I thought we would host,” Durand said with a smile after practice on Monday.

Just after noon on Sunday, the NCAA announced the host locations for the next two rounds of the Division III women’s basketball tournament. Durand, the coach of the undefeated, fifth-ranked Northern women’s basketball team, did not understand why her team would not be hosting.
