This semester, one Ohio Northern athlete each week will be featured as the Northern Review ‘Athlete of the Week.’ Sports editor Grant Pepper will talk to each athlete briefly about what they do in their sport as well as in the classroom, and the videos will be posted here and on the Northern Review’s Twitter page: @NorthernOnLine.

This week, Kierra Watson was selected as the Northern Review ‘Athlete of the Week.’ Watson is a junior swimmer who specializes in the backstroke and I.M. She is one of Ohio Northern’s most productive swimmers, scoring 83 points (which was tied for most on the team) at last year’s OAC Championship meet.

Watson has earned ‘OAC Swimmer of the Week’ honors twice this season. She was given the award on Nov. 20 for sweeping the backstroke events in the team’s win over Wittenberg. Then, she was given the award again on Jan. 21 for posting six victories in six events against Baldwin Wallace and Oberlin.

Last year, Watson finished second in the 200 I.M., 100 backstroke and 200 backstroke at the OAC Championship meet. She will look to improve upon those finishes at this year’s conference meet, which is just two weeks away.

FROM NOVEMBER: Season preview: Women's swimming & diving persists despite small numbers

Watson is a junior pharmacy major from Brownsburg, Ind. This week, she talked about how the women’s swim team has adapted to having less people on the roster this season, how her role as a leader has changed during her time at Northern, and more:
