Site preview: Who’s coming to King Horn for this weekend’s Sweet 16

This weekend, King Horn will once again play host to NCAA Division III women’s basketball tournament action. After hosting the first two rounds last weekend, ONU will host the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight rounds this Friday and Saturday, respectively, as well.

The fifth-ranked, undefeated Polar Bears will face 20th-ranked SUNY Geneseo (N.Y.) in the Sweet 16 on Friday night at 7:30 p.m., in the nightcap, while 10th-ranked Christopher Newport (Va.) and 18th-ranked Hope (Mich.) will battle in the first game of the night at 5:30 p.m.

Seven Top-10 schools still alive in Sweet 16

After the second round, only 16 teams remain in the NCAA Division III women’s basketball tournament. While seven Top-10 teams are still alive, including fifth-ranked Ohio Northern, 18th-ranked Hope headlined the second round by beating third-ranked, undefeated Thomas More, who had not lost since March 15, 2014.

Northern advances to Sweet 16 behind depth, defense

For just over an hour on Sunday, Michele Durand thought her team was going to New York. She wasn’t pleased.

“When I first heard, I was mad, because I thought we would host,” Durand said with a smile after practice on Monday.

Just after noon on Sunday, the NCAA announced the host locations for the next two rounds of the Division III women’s basketball tournament. Durand, the coach of the undefeated, fifth-ranked Northern women’s basketball team, did not understand why her team would not be hosting.

Four Top-25 teams fall on opening night of tournament

After last night, only 32 teams remain in the NCAA Div. III women’s basketball tournament. While Ohio Northern won their first-round matchup against Lakeland (Wis.) by 32, there were also three other 30+ point blowouts on the tournament’s opening night, including two on Northern’s side of the bracket. Conversely, nine games were also decided by less than five points.
