The Northern Review's 'ONU Athletics Year in Review': 2017

Dec 30, 2017 - Comments: 0

With the sun about to set on 2017, it’s time to reflect on the year in ONU athletics. 2017 featured three NCAA Tournament appearances, four individual national championships (and two national runner-up finishes), and four OAC team titles. 12 Ohio Northern athletes earned All-America honors in 2017.

Although it is a bit difficult to hand out awards based on the calendar year, as it splits the school year and therefore will include last year’s winter and spring sports and this year’s fall sports, we decided to give it our best shot nonetheless.

It had been one year and six days since the fifth-ranked Ohio Northern women’s basketball team had lost a game. They finished the 2016-17 season 30-1, losing to 10th-ranked Christopher Newport in an intense Elite Eight matchup at King Horn Sports Center last March.

Inexperience proves costly in ONU’s regional final loss to Wittenberg

The way volleyball works, there are very little breaks come tournament time. The opening weekend consists of three rounds, played on consecutive days, in which eight teams arrive to a regional destination but only one makes it out alive.

Making it out of the first weekend is a draining endeavor. Coaches must prepare for three different opponents in three days, with less than 24 hours in between each match and each opponent tougher than the last. Players must perform at their peak on short rest, staying mentally sharp during the biggest weekend of their volleyball careers.

The 14th-ranked ONU women’s soccer team will be competing in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday morning, when they will host Penn St.-Behrend at 11:30 a.m. It will mark the program’s first trip to the national tournament in five years and the first time that they have hosted the first two rounds of the tournament since 2011.
