Closing time: Where each ONU fall sports team stands down the stretch

Oct 15, 2017 - Comments: 0

There are two weeks until ‘Championship Week,’ when the OAC Tournaments for volleyball, men’s and women’s soccer take place, the ONU men’s and women’s cross country teams run in the OAC Championship meet, and the football team heads toward the end of their regular season (although their last game isn’t until Nov. 11).

This means that it’s time to evaluate where each ONU fall sports team stands coming down the stretch, and which games, meets or matches might play a pivotal role in determining their place in the conference.

Heading into this season, the Ohio Northern women’s soccer team had goals. Lofty ones.

They wanted to win the OAC regular season for the second straight year, and were predicted to do so easily by conference coaches in this year’s preseason poll (they received all nine first-place votes). They wanted to win the OAC Tournament after losing in the finals the last two seasons, and they wanted to make it back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in five years.

Sunday was a day of righteous, widespread protest in the NFL.

Many teams linked arms during the National Anthem, while some individual players kneeled, sat or stretched as it was played before kickoff. A handful of teams stayed in the locker room.

Northern faces defensive test in home opener

Two weeks ago, as the mid-Michigan sunset tinted Adrian’s Docking Stadium orange, Ohio Northern found itself in an all-too-familiar scenario.

After the Polar Bears led 21-16 heading into the fourth quarter, Adrian running back Emmanuel Stewart scampered into the endzone just two minutes into the period to take the lead.

ONU lost three games in the fourth quarter in 2016, resulting in a disappointing 5-5 finish. It had been on their mind all offseason. This couldn’t be happening again, could it?
