Closing time: Where each ONU fall sports team stands down the stretch

There are two weeks until ‘Championship Week,’ when the OAC Tournaments for volleyball, men’s and women’s soccer take place, the ONU men’s and women’s cross country teams run in the OAC Championship meet, and the football team heads toward the end of their regular season (although their last game isn’t until Nov. 11).

This means that it’s time to evaluate where each ONU fall sports team stands coming down the stretch, and which games, meets or matches might play a pivotal role in determining their place in the conference.

In volleyball, the setter serves as the extension of the coach on the court. They are likened to a quarterback in football or a point guard in basketball, tasked with being chief communicator and organizer of the team.

They bear a vital role, and this year, ONU head coach Kate Witte will have to find a new starting setter after two-time All-American Ashley Borchers graduated in May.

Witte said Friday that two underclassmen are in contention for the spot: sophomore Madison Broering and freshman Katie Wade.

For Kate Witte, this weekend is a return to the promised land.

Ohio Northern’s head volleyball coach, now in her 26th year at the helm, has made it to the NCAA tournament 20 times, including a stretch of 11 straight appearances from 2000-2010. She has been to ten Sweet 16’s, four Elite Eight’s and one Final Four.
