Can ONU challenge Mount Union for the conference crown this season?

Last February, in the meet that mattered most to the Ohio Northern men’s indoor track & field team, they finished where they have three of the last four years -- in second place.

For the fifth straight year, Mount Union won the OAC Championship meet, scoring 231.5 points to ONU’s 151. Northern recorded their highest team point total in the conference meet since 2012, the last time they won it (and the end of their own five-year run as champions), but still lagged over 80 points behind the immensely balanced Purple Raiders.

There Emily Richards stood -- under the California sun, in lane two, at approximately 2:06 p.m. Pacific Time last Sunday.

And here came the camera.

Moving from lane eight to lane one, NBC’s cameraman spent a brief moment on each runner as they were introduced before the start of the race.

Meticulous time and preparation are what got Richards to this point, just seconds away from competing in the biggest race of her life, the 800-meter final at the U.S. Track & Field Outdoor Championships.

Yet she was, in no way, prepared for this.

When it happened, Erin Hester (formerly Erin Hipp) was at her West Chester, Ohio home with her two daughters, ages five and two, and her two stepsons, ages 11 and nine.

“It was something that I was following so I was very excited, knowing that she was going into the meet first in the nation,” Hester (below) said. “It was definitely something that I was following and watching. My kids were all excited about it too.”
