Rob Rardin was mad.

No, in the coach’s words, he was pissed.

It was August of 2001 and the Nordonia High School football team was grinding through two-a-days. Rardin, then the team’s head coach, had given his defensive staff a task.

“I got with my coaches, and I had a very young staff, and I said, ‘I want to know where we can play Jason Trusnik,’” Rardin said. “He’s too good of a kid to not have a position for.”

There are a lot of uncertainties in season openers, especially when the two teams playing have not faced each other in an official game since 1989.

What will this team throw at us? How will they defend us as opposed to other teams? How different will they look in person versus on film?

On Aug. 12, senior swimmer Ian Simpson fought the 90-degree heat to finish the USA Triathlon Championship race in just under two and a half hours. He placed 461st out of nearly 1,100 male finishers.

The Olympic-length race, held in Omaha, NE, consisted of a one-mile swim, a 25-mile bike and a six-mile run. In an interview with Sportsbeat 94.9’s Grant Pepper on The Pep Talk last week, Simpson said that he came close to his personal best time during the race.

In volleyball, the setter serves as the extension of the coach on the court. They are likened to a quarterback in football or a point guard in basketball, tasked with being chief communicator and organizer of the team.

They bear a vital role, and this year, ONU head coach Kate Witte will have to find a new starting setter after two-time All-American Ashley Borchers graduated in May.

Witte said Friday that two underclassmen are in contention for the spot: sophomore Madison Broering and freshman Katie Wade.
