From hesitant to confident: How Omega Hollies found her calling and where it will take her next

Four years ago, no one wanted Omega Hollies to be a teacher. The recent Grand Valley State graduate ran around from small job to even smaller job. She filled orders at a local yarn shop one day and nannied a couple young children the next. In the time she had to herself, Hollies checked the web. She hoped every day there would be more than four positions open teaching high school sociology.

A high school never popped up on her server, but Ohio Northern University did.

“Why are we here? What’s the meaning of life? What’s my purpose?” These are the kinds of questions Ohio Northern chaplain David MacDonald hears from students he counsels––from Christians to Muslims to Jews to agnostics. MacDonald is passionate about campus ministry in all its colors and kinds, compelling the Methodist elder to write his recent book “Benedict on Campus” about Catholic traditions.

The campus-wide power outage on Tuesday, Aug. 28 disrupted both lights and air-conditioning, but it didn’t discourage over 100 students from attending the Writing Center open house. Students found free snacks, a gift card drawing, and peer tutors explaining the center’s services as they entered the doors. These services have expanded ever since Dr. Justine Post joined the Ohio Northern faculty in 2015.
