ONU Wind Orchestra tells stories in winter performance

Ohio Northern University's Department of Music featured contemporary classical music in its winter Freed Center for the Performing Arts concert.

When it comes to lacrosse, like most sports, each region has its own style of play.

“Whenever you play teams from Long Island or New York, they always complain about getting hit,” Anthony Pavone, a freshman Polar Bear lacrosse player from Ohio, said with a laughing smirk.

Alex Pizarro, another member of the first Ohio Northern lacrosse team, couldn’t deny it. Neither could Peter Hardt, a player from Long Island, NY. Pizarro is from Maryland, but he agrees that the game is played differently in Ohio than it is on the East Coast.

On Feb. 23, readers gathered inside the Heterick Memorial Library to discuss multicultural literature. The event was co-sponsored by the English Department's Sigma Tau Delta and ONU's Office of Multicultural Development.

Michelle Durand’s practices are not quiet. There is clapping, and cheering, and intensity. And there’s a reason for that.

“Silent practices are not championship practices,” says Durand.

And this season, like in the past four, the ONU women’s basketball team has been anything but quiet in the OAC.

President DiBiasio is awarded distinguished FIJI award at Greek Awards

On Sunday, Feb. 14 the Greek community gathered in the McIntosh Ballroom for the annual Greek Awards banquet.  While Greek chapters received their awards, at the end of the ceremony, Ohio Northern University President, Daniel DiBiasio, also received the Distinguished Phi Gamma Delta (FIJI) Award. 

Open Doors "A Rubi Affair" raises over $1,000 for AIDS Resource Center in Lima

On Feb. 20, Open Doors had their annual event, A Rubi Affair, which raised over $1,000. This was met with a match by the Rubi Girls, bringing the total to over $2,000. All the money will be going to the AIDS Resource Center in Lima, Ohio.

English majors to tackle multicultural texts in reading, discussion

Ohio Northern University's English Department welcomes the Ada community to the Heterick Memorial Library on Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. for an evening of reading and discussion hosted by the department's honorary society, Sigma Tau Delta. Topics will focus on multicultural literature. 

ONU Wind Orchestra - "Raising the Bar"

Ohio Northern University's Department of Music welcomes the Ada community for an evening of song and dance on Feb. 25 at 7:30 p.m. inside the Freed Center for the Performing Arts. The ONU Wind Orchestra performs lively music while the ONU Dancers collaborate on select numbers. Tickets are $5 for ONU students and can be purchased at the Freed Center's box office, or here

Bone marrow drives seek to delete blood cancer, raise awareness

This year ONU’s SSHP teamed up with Kappa Psi to hold a two-day drive, which took place on Feb. 15 and 16, and registered 141 potential donors with the help of 24 volunteers. The process itself is simple: donors register and have the inside of their cheek swabbed. The procedure takes less than 15 minutes. ONU's SSJP hopes to continue holding drives spreading awareness of blood cancer and how donors can help.

Lacrosse kicks off at ONU

Per student request, men’s and women’s lacrosse will begin on the campus of Ohio Northern University this February. Lacrosse, a popular sport that is growing in the United States, now evolves to Ohio Northern University in Ada, Ohio. A double header game will be held at Dial-Roberson Stadium on February 27 at 1 pm for the men and 4 pm for the women.

As part of Black History Month this year, the Office of Multicultural Development sought to discuss these questions in the context of black America; more specifically, the relevance of oral history to the story of black Americans.
