ONU, Adrian have hostile history to settle

Aug 31, 2017 - Comments: 0

There are a lot of uncertainties in season openers, especially when the two teams playing have not faced each other in an official game since 1989.

What will this team throw at us? How will they defend us as opposed to other teams? How different will they look in person versus on film?

There is one question that won’t have to be answered on Saturday night, however, in Ohio Northern’s season opener against Adrian (Mich.). When it comes to the tone of Saturday's contest, one thing will be certain.

With Borchers gone, Northern will have big shoes to fill

In volleyball, the setter serves as the extension of the coach on the court. They are likened to a quarterback in football or a point guard in basketball, tasked with being chief communicator and organizer of the team.

They bear a vital role, and this year, ONU head coach Kate Witte will have to find a new starting setter after two-time All-American Ashley Borchers graduated in May.

Witte said Friday that two underclassmen are in contention for the spot: sophomore Madison Broering and freshman Katie Wade.

Women’s soccer looks to bridge gap, make NCAA Tournament in 2017

When teams travel internationally to play preseason exhibition games, it’s usually more about the experience than the competition itself.

Even ONU women’s soccer coach Mark Batman, who took his team to Europe in the beginning of August for an 11-day foreign tour, said that “it was a good experience for [the team], but more important is the relationship and culture piece they get from that trip.

“Soccer is not the priority on that trip, it’s kind of the balance of soccer and socializing.”

That held true for most of the team, but not for McKenna Welsh.
