How Jenna Hollar became ONU’s most notorious base thief

Under an overcast spring sky, on a diamond lined with palm trees which swayed lightly in the wind, there stood Jenna Hollar.

After leading off with a single, she positioned herself on first base, rocking back and forth in an athletic stance. Her left foot in front and her right foot on the bag, she swayed as McDaniel (Md.) pitcher Cassie Rickrode began her motion.

It was the final game of Ohio Northern’s spring break trip, where they played 12 games in six days amid the Kissimmee, Fla. heat. While mentally and physically drained, Hollar knew what was on the line.

A peek into an Orwellian world

“1984” has been an influential novel ever since it was first published in 1949 by George Orwell. When I first discovered this book, I found a worn copy of it in my high school library’s discard pile where they gave away worn out books they no longer circulate for free. Since then, I’ve read it three times.

“1984” is often placed on school banned books lists.

After three straight days of doubleheaders at the Sunkissed Games in Kissimmee, Fla. -- six games crammed into a span of 72 hours -- the ONU softball team got Wednesday off to rest.

They deserved it, after all. They’re undefeated.

Northern is 6-0, the program’s best start since 2009, when they began the season 13-0 and would eventually advance to the NCAA Div. III Championships.

Braden Kuhn, calm and collected, gears up for national run

Braden Kuhn is barely hanging on.

At least that’s how it appears. The slender and toned, six-foot-four diver is bouncing up and down on the three-meter board, teetering high above the water with only his toes gripping the edge of the sea-green plank.

The arches of his feet do all the work as he bobs in meditation, his eyes closed and arms suspended horizontally.

For a moment, nothing moves.

Ohio Northern’s natatorium, filled with once-raucous spectators, falls silent. Both teams in attendance watch in anticipation from the deck.
