Networking, development opportunities, and enhancement in knowledge and communication are what every student strives for in their college experience. The Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), a pre-professional organization here at Ohio Northern, does just that and it is reflected in their National success.

For a small program, public relations has done a lot of big things for Ohio Northern. During the Chapter’s tenure here on campus, Northern’s PRSSA has held several national offices and had fellow faculty and alumni receive prestigious awards. This year Kevin Saghy, ONU alumni who works for the Chicago Cubs, won the Hall of Fame award. And ever since its inception, ONU’s PRSSA has won the PRSSA National Star Chapter Award.

Each year the Chapter leaders are encouraged to provide programming and relationship building opportunities for students in order to be eligible for this award. For example, setting up weekly meetings and having professional speakers speak at the meetings are just a couple of things that are done in PRSSA that has made them eligible for this prestigious recognition.

Vice President of PRSSA, Megan Cottongim, elaborated more on what public relations has done for ONU and the influence it has on the students.

Meeting every Thursday at 7 p.m. in PAC 132, PRSSA has speakers, workshops, and discussions regarding public relations and networking. They also have their student run public relations firm, True North, where students do real work for real clients, similar to that of a public relations firm outside of college.

Doing public relations work for real off-campus clients can be beneficial for all majors. PRSSA advisor, Alisa Agozzino, assures that all majors are welcome.

“Marketing, communications, multimedia journalism, art design, math majors, we can use them all. True North PR, does quite a few projects for clients and the more diversity among majors we can retain, the better end-product we can produce for a client.”

Speakers are lined up for the rest of the semester along with different workshops and discussions. PRSSA welcomes anyone to attend the weekly meetings, listen to the speakers and have an opportunity to network.
