Nov. 17 will be the first annual Jail-n-Bail philanthropy event held by Alpha Xi Delta. This is the first event of its kind to come to Ohio Northern University. Students, faculty, staff and community members are all invited to participate in the event.

In order to “jail” a student, a donation of two dollars is needed. The student jailed must remain in “jail” which is located in the Mac Activities room. Students can be bailed out for a donation of five dollars, and if they are not bailed out before the time is up, they will remain in the activities room doing various activities. Staff are also able to be “jailed” but for a different price. In order to jail a faculty member, a donation of ten dollars must be made. The price to bail them out is 20 dollars.

According to Alpha Xi Delta’s Philanthropy Chair, Tessa Cross, while students are “jailed” they will be able to play games, do crafts and put puzzles together. The event is meant to “raise awareness and money for Autism Speaks because autism is the fastest growing serious developmental disability in the United States,” said Cross.

The Jail-n-Bail event has been held at other universities across the country and has brought students and staff together to raise money for autism. The disability affects one in 68 children and there is currently no cure as well as no known cause. Proceeds from the Jail-n-Bail events go toward family care, research for a cause and a cure.

Breanna Hester, Financial Vice President of Alpha Xi Delta, has shared that “this semester Alpha Xi Delta [at Ohio Northern University] has raised $862 for Autism Speaks.” Jail-n-Bail is likely to bring in more money.
