Theatre alumni return for a good cause

A group of 20 Ohio Northern University theatre alumni returned to campus last weekend for fun and games, and primarily to raise money to support a special fund honoring former Department of Communication and Theatre Chairman Nils Reiss.

“Alumni had a chance to continue Nils’ charge that we had a responsibility to build upon the foundation of great experiences provided by the Department of Theatre Arts,” says Christopher Sprague, a 1989 theatre alumnus and current consultant for Project Theater in Chicago.

The ONU Theatre Alumni Mentoring Project, organized through social media discussions, featured the following:

  • Three mentoring workshops for current theatre students. One session allowed international theatre production students to meet working technical theatre artists.
  • A popular session on “How to be a Working Actor in Any Market,” which showed current students how the skills they’re learning at ONU will translate into the worthwhile careers.
  • A reception and silent auction which raised $800 for the Nils Reiss Fund.

“We hope this turns into a biennial event that combines a reunion-type atmosphere, fundraising for the Nils Reiss Fund, and expanding mentoring programs for ONU students,” says Sprague.

Sprague organized the special event with Reiss; Bill Robinson, retired executive assistant to President Daniel DiBiasio; Catherine Albrecht, Dean of the Getty College of Arts and Sciences; Laurie Bell, current chair of the Department of Theatre Arts; and representatives of the Office of Alumni Affairs.

Reiss served as the department chairman from 1982 until his retirement in 2013.
