Intramural Sports on Campus Rising in Interest

Intramural Flag Football is now going to be played on the turf at the ONU football stadium, where the Flag Football tournament was held last year. (ONU Sports Information/ Tim Glon)

The intramural sports program at Ohio Northern University has been a campus popularity among all grades and backgrounds of students. The intramural sports offered here come in seasons, just like varsity sports. In the fall and spring, the sports offered to students are football, soccer, softball and volleyball. In the winter, basketball rules the campus of ONU and is the only intramural sport offered. Even if you are not a varsity athlete, the intramural sports present an opportunity to students to be involved if they wish to be.

Intramural sports are organized and headed by ONU senior student, John Hetrick. Hetrick does all of the planning and scheduling on his own. He has given some advice to whoever will be filling his shoes next year, “I’ve been doing this awhile and one thing I have learned is that it is definitely not a one person job. I have been assisted the last few years and it makes it a lot easier and fluent for everyone. One person organizes the events, and one person goes out to set up and officiate the events.”

Hetrick has progressed the intramural sports over his tenure here. For example, in years past the flag football games have always been played on the grass fields next to Klinger Road. Now, the flag football games have been moved to Dial-Roberson Stadium and will be played under the lights on the turf. Evening games were scheduled to better accommodate students having daytime classes and missing their games. Students have the chance to play on the same fields as the varsity athletes. This brings out a higher quality in competitiveness and field conditions. Little things like that have made the intramural sports program here at ONU much more organized and enjoyable.

Intramural sports here at Ohio Northern University have been a popularity on campus. The students can use the same facilities as the varsity athletes. Whether it be fall, winter or spring, there are sports available for students to consider participating in. So, varsity athlete or not, intramural sports here on campus are on option for any member of the ONU community.
