Before October ends, several organizations at Ohio Northern University attempt to squeeze in some final Halloween events to celebrate the spooky day before the holiday season approaches the campus.

Tomorrow, on Halloween, from 11 a.m.– 1 p.m., Heterick Library is hosting a special event, Hauntings at Heterick. During this event, located on the first floor of the building, the library will offer refreshments including coffee, apple cider, doughnuts and cookies for anyone who stops by.

In addition to the refreshments, there will be a Halloween costume contest, but the library adds a special twist. Costumes should be a representation of a favorite literary character or author. Prizes will be awarded, as well as prizes awarded to anyone who brings their own reusable mug for coffee/apple cider and trivia handouts.

"Heterick tries to host at least one event per semester where we invite students, faculty and staff to the library for coffee and snacks. We usually plan the event around a certain theme, like Polar Bear Day or Library Lovers Month. Since Halloween is a favorite holiday for students, we decided to host a Halloween event because Heterick is supposedly haunted," Jennifer Donley, the Catalog and Serials Librarian for Heterick Library, states.

Heterick Library is believed to be haunted because the Heterick family, the family that graciously donated money for the construction of the library, have their ashes interred in the brick walls of the building. These ashes are located behind the two bronze plaques on the west side of the exterior.

"Hauntings at Heterick will be a fun event because it is something unique. It's a great way to get kids to come to the library for fun and not just research," Donley states.

End the Halloween season with a thrill of literary fun at the Haunting at Heterick event tomorrow from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. on the first floor of Heterick Library.
