Stressed out?  Here are some tips!

It’s the beginning of the spring semester and it’s most likely you’re stressed out already, right? The challenges presented by the new classes and re-adjusting back to the college lifestyle.  However, there are numerous ways to avoid the stress this semester.  Your lifestyle doesn’t have to relate to the Twenty-One Pilots song “Stressed Out.”

There are many reasons for stress, and as college students, we all have stressful days.  Some primary reasons for stress are as follows:

Disorganization:  The messy dorm rooms and book bag that looks like a bottomless pit.  With a messy dorm room or book bag, it’s easy to lose track of where your belongings are.  When you lose or misplace things, the result is simple: you feel stressed and irritated. 

Poor diet and sleep:  We’ve all done it. Pulling an all-nighter, studying for too long, up too late with friends, or even playing a game too long.  These habits throw off your sleep schedule.  Poor eating habits result in an insufficient diet and not getting enough nutrients to keep you energized and productive throughout the day.

Too much involvement:  It’s great to be involved on campus because the more you’re involved with, the more experience you gain.  However, sometimes it’s difficult to know your limit when it comes to how many extra curricular activities you can handle.  Doing too much leads to stress, anxiety and a lack of focus. 

So now that you know some reasons behind stress, here are some ways to stay stress free and how to avoid it: 

Organize more:  Cleaning your dorm every week is a great way to keep track of where your materials are.  Everything has a place.  Purchase a shelf organizer or even a small bookshelf. There are numerous ways to stay organized. 

Stay active:  Just because the sun isn’t out, that doesn’t give a legitimate excuse to not go to the local gym.  By joining a sport, intramural club sports allow you to get that hour of exercise in every day. 

Manage your own time:  Setting a schedule or a to-do list is a great way to keep track of all the things that need to be done. It’s great to make a list right before going to bed.  By sticking to the schedule you enable yourself to automatically manage your time.  It’s better to quit one thing rather than losing quality in everything else. 

The spring semester is full of challenges and great opportunities to expand your college experience.  But at all costs, avoid stress and try to stay stress free this semester.  Ultimately, it’s the choice of the individual, so make the most of it!
