The Polar Bear football squad had a handful of players do big things this past Saturday, but junior receiver/kick returner Devon Price had a standout game to earn this week’s Northern Review Athlete of the Week.

Price came into Saturday’s contest coming off of a hot season from the 2013 campaign. Being a first team all-OAC kick returner and a second team all-OAC wide receiver, he has been a main ingredient of the Polar Bear offense and is a go-to weapon for Coach Dean Paul.

This weekend, Ohio Northern squared off against the Bears of Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, and starting off the season on a winning note is definitely a boost for the Polar bears.

The Polar Bear’s stand out receiver talked about how he felt strapping up the chinstrap again, “Being in a big city for our season opener was something as a team we were ready for, and it was a great feeling. Being out there with my team Saturday knowing we worked very hard in the spring and over the summer to come out victorious versus a team who was ranked higher than us made the feeling even better,” said Price.

Price put up some big numbers in Saturday’s battle, coming up with eight receptions for 130 yards and a touchdown, while being a kick returner gives Price that extra edge over his opponents. That ‘extra edge’ gave him 220 all-purpose-yards and boosted the polar bears to a 31-24 victory over Washington. The tides weren’t always high for Ohio Northern on Saturday, as they trailed early in the game 17-0 in the second quarter.

Price and the offense went straight to work, as they scored 24 unanswered points and took a lead after halftime that lasted the rest of the game. “We were beating ourselves with penalties. As a team our backs were against the wall,” said Price. Price averaged 16.2 yards per catch, which helped the offense march down the field to score. He went on to say, “I knew we needed a boost. After a few big plays, I'm happy I could help my team get a victory.”

After a week in the books for the 2014 Polar Bear football program, Devon Price has set a nice bar for next week’s winner for the Athlete of the Week. Congratulations to Devon on his outstanding performance and bringing a win to Polar Bear nation!
