After last night, only 32 teams remain in the NCAA Div. III women’s basketball tournament. While Ohio Northern won their first-round matchup against Lakeland (Wis.) by 32, there were also three other 30+ point blowouts on the tournament’s opening night, including two on Northern’s side of the bracket. Conversely, nine games were also decided by less than five points.

Eighth-ranked Wartburg was the only Top-10 team to fall, and was one of just four Top-25 teams to lose on opening night. The road for top-seeded Amherst got easier, as two ranked opponents in their regional fell last night. Second-ranked St. Thomas will also now avoid Wartburg, who they could have faced tonight if Wartburg would not have been upset.

Ohio Northern’s road does not get any easier, as there were no upsets in their regional on opening night. Including ONU, six ranked teams are still alive in that regional. Third-ranked Thomas More will play No. 18 Hope tonight and fifth-ranked ONU will face No. 15 Trine, highlighting some of the second round’s premier matchups.
