Four of's ‘Top-Five’ survive Sweet 16

After Friday night, just eight teams remain in this year’s NCAA Division III women’s basketball tournament. Fifth-ranked Ohio Northern downed 20th-ranked SUNY Geneseo 72-55, as only two victors in this year’s Sweet 16 won by less than 10 points.

Six of the eight remaining teams are in the top 10, and four of the nation’s top five teams (based on rankings) are still alive. Top-seeded Amherst won easily against unranked Babson on Friday night, while second-ranked St. Thomas escaped with a seven-point win over Marymount.

Here is a breakdown of what happened in Friday night’s Sweet 16:


Top left quadrant:

#1 Amherst beat Babson, 63-39.

Mass-Dartmouth beat SUNY New Paltz, 67-57.


Bottom left quadrant:

#5 Ohio Northern beat SUNY Geneseo, 72-55.

#10 Christopher Newport beat #18 Hope, 79-74.


Top right quadrant:

#2 St. Thomas beat Marymount, 62-55.

UPSET: #16 Whitman beat #7 Trinity, 69-59.


Bottom right quadrant:

#4 Tufts beat #17 Scranton, 65-48.

#6 Washington U. beat #13 UW-Oshkosh, 68-56.
