Northern faces defensive test in home opener

Sep 15, 2017 - Comments: 0

Two weeks ago, as the mid-Michigan sunset tinted Adrian’s Docking Stadium orange, Ohio Northern found itself in an all-too-familiar scenario.

After the Polar Bears led 21-16 heading into the fourth quarter, Adrian running back Emmanuel Stewart scampered into the endzone just two minutes into the period to take the lead.

ONU lost three games in the fourth quarter in 2016, resulting in a disappointing 5-5 finish. It had been on their mind all offseason. This couldn’t be happening again, could it?

There are a lot of uncertainties in season openers, especially when the two teams playing have not faced each other in an official game since 1989.

What will this team throw at us? How will they defend us as opposed to other teams? How different will they look in person versus on film?

There is one question that won’t have to be answered on Saturday night, however, in Ohio Northern’s season opener against Adrian (Mich.). When it comes to the tone of Saturday's contest, one thing will be certain.

Senior linebacker Zach Schmerge, who led the OAC in tackles last season, was tabbed as a preseason second-team All-American by d3football.com on Tuesday afternoon.

Schmerge was one of five OAC players listed as first or second-team preseason All-Americans. John Carroll’s Ray Brown (DE) and Mason McKendrick (LB) were given first-team honors, while Marietta’s Roger Walker (RB), Mount Union’s Mike Vidal (DT) and Schmerge were named to the second team.

CANTON- As each coach talked at the podium about their team during OAC Media Day on Thursday, Dean Paul listened.

He scribbled down notes on his welcome packet, detailing personnel changes and tidbits that he thought could be beneficial to remember.

And a lot has changed this season in the OAC -- there are three new head coaches, several new rules, and Mount Union isn’t the defending champ for the first time in a quarter century.
