“The volleyball program has a strong culture of teaching girls about life and not only volleyball. Everyone in the program is trying to mold the players to become not only the best athletes, but the best people we can be.” This is what sophomore Jordyn Heitbrink initially responded with when she thought about being a part of the Ohio Northern Women’s Volleyball team. Inexperience proves costly in ONU’s regional final loss to Wittenberg

The way volleyball works, there are very little breaks come tournament time. The opening weekend consists of three rounds, played on consecutive days, in which eight teams arrive to a regional destination but only one makes it out alive.

Coaches must prepare for three different opponents in three days, with less than 24 hours in between each match and each opponent tougher than the last. Players must perform at their peak on short rest, staying mentally sharp during the biggest weekend of their volleyball careers.

In volleyball, the setter serves as the extension of the coach on the court. They are likened to a quarterback in football or a point guard in basketball, tasked with being chief communicator and organizer of the team.

They bear a vital role, and this year, ONU head coach Kate Witte will have to find a new starting setter after two-time All-American Ashley Borchers graduated in May.

Witte said Friday that two underclassmen are in contention for the spot: sophomore Madison Broering and freshman Katie Wade.
