Lacks family: Henrietta "will always live"

On Tuesday, Jan. 21, Ohio Northern University welcomed two very special people to the Freed Center for a cozy evening of stories and laughter. For the students, it was a learning experience, but for the two women who came to visit the campus, it was an opportunity to share their grandmother's story, the amazing phenomenon of Henrietta Lacks.

The Department of Multicultural Development and the Cultural and Special Events Committee sponsored A Meeting with the Lacks Family on Jan 21. The event was made open to the public, free of charge. The main focus: a woman named Henrietta Lacks. She was a poor, black tobacco farmer from the south. Her cells were cultured to become some of the first cells that could ever be grown in a laboratory.
