Finding peace in the penalties: Inside the conflicted mind of Dean McNeil

Nov 09, 2016 - Comments: 0

Dean McNeil bounces back and forth in his goal, staring down the one with the ball who is dressed in opposing threads and standing just 12 yards away.

Logistically, this shouldn’t be hard for them. These are penalty kicks, and the advantage always goes to the kicker.

After all, McNeil has to cover a goal that is eight feet high by eight yards wide, and he has no clue where they want to kick the ball. He will have to make a split-second reaction, and the chances of him guessing correctly are slim.

They entered ONU the year after we played for the national championship.”

David Janusz, a junior forward on the ONU men's soccer team, experienced a season-ending ankle injury during his freshman season. His recovery and return were fueled by his desire to get back on the field and win an OAC championship. While the team suffered a key injury to their leading goal-scorer, Matt Kinkopf, last season, this year's team is healthy and coming for the conference crown. They are currently in first place in the OAC with just three games left in the regular season.
