There Emily Richards stood -- under the California sun, in lane two, at approximately 2:06 p.m. Pacific Time last Sunday.

And here came the camera.

Moving from lane eight to lane one, NBC’s cameraman spent a brief moment on each runner as they were introduced before the start of the race.

Yet she was, in no way, prepared for this.

When it happened, Erin Hester (formerly Erin Hipp) was at her West Chester, Ohio home with her two daughters, ages five and two, and her two stepsons, ages 11 and nine.

“It was something that I was following so I was very excited, knowing that she was going into the meet first in the nation,” Hester (below) said. “It was definitely something that I was following and watching. My kids were all excited about it too.”

In a typical women’s collegiate cross country race, lasting 3.7 miles, the ‘actual race’ doesn’t start until a mile and a half or two miles in.

This is according to ONU cross country coach Jason Maus, who says that after a couple of miles, “That’s when a lot of the race usually takes place, and the moves are made.”
